Nick Jackson • Battery Caption Head
Nick Jackson is an active performer, educator, and advocate for the marching arts. After spending five summers touring with world class drum corps, Nick has been continually striving to further grow the culture and education of rudimental percussion in the state of Utah.
Nick's first three summers were spent with the Seattle Cascades from Seattle, Washington. The Northwest drum corps placed in DCI semifinals during the 2011 and 2012 seasons while Nick performed with them. He served as the center snare and drumline captain during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The 2014 and 2015 seasons were spent with the Madison Scouts from Madison, Wisconsin. During Nick's time there he earned several recognitions including the "Rookie of the Year" in 2014. He also served as the center snare in the 2015 season and took the percussion section to a 8th place finish at the DCI World Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Aside from his achievements in the marching world, Nick devotes his studies to music at the University of Utah. He is currently working towards a Bachelor of Arts for Music Education, and has excelled amongst the percussion studio at the University. Nick consistently places in the top 5 at Utah PAS Day of Percussion competitive solos brackets and has taken 1st place in the marimba category (2014) and rudimental snare drum category (2016-2017). Nick has studied with Dr. Michael Sammons, George Brown, Doug Wolf, and Kelly Wallis during his time at the University. Nick has taught percussion at several high schools and independent organizations around the state including: Riverton High School (2013-2017), Davis High School (2014-2016), Grantsville High School (2014), and Weber State Indoor Percussion (2017).
Nick also has a private lesson studio of various students he teaches weekly. Nick lives in Salt Lake City with his wife and daughter.
Stuart Johnson • Asst. Battery Caption Head, Snares
Stuart Johnson is a musician and educator residing in Salt Lake City, Utah. Stuart has experience in a variety of concert and marching ensembles. He was a four year member of the University of Utah drumline beginning in 2010, serving as the center snare and drumline section leader in his final season in 2013.
Stuart also performed with the University of Utah Percussion Ensemble in spring 2011 and 2012. Stuart marched with Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps in the 2012 season, studying under Kevin Welborn, Derek Fields, and Matt Little. He is a WSIP alumnus, marching his only indoor season in 2014. Stuart began his educational career shortly after graduating Park City High School, when he served as a battery tech for the 2010 and 2011 parade bands.
Currently, Stuart is a Business Analyst at FIS Global, and enjoys practicing piano and snare in an effort stave off "old-man hands."
Billy DeBoer • Bass Drums
Mr. DeBoer has been an influential figure in the Utah percussion scene for many years. After graduating from Davis High School in 2001 as a member of their drumline, Billy began teaching at Roy High School where he was the Percussion Caption Head until 2004. He then took the job as Percussion Caption Head at Bonneville High School where he helped build the program from the ground up.
In 2007, Mr. DeBoer founded Thenami Winter Drumline, later renamed Junction City Hybrid and now operating as Weber State Indoor Percussion. Mr. DeBoer has consistently been at the center of the indoor percussion scene in Weber County and across the state and is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Intermountain Percussion Association.
Parker Brown • Snares
Parker Brown is a musician, arranger, and educator residing in the Ogden area. Parker started his marching career at Weber High where he marched three seasons and served two seasons as center snare both for the outdoor, and indoor seasons. After high school Parker spent three years marching with the Weber State Wildcat Band from 2016 – 2018 serving as center snare in the 2018 season. Parker is also is an alumni of Gold Spike marching from 2015 – 2017.
Starting his teaching career in 2016 Parker spent the next two years as the battery caption head for the Ogden High marching band. In his two years with the Tiger marching band they took 6 percussion captions and won the 2A state finals percussion caption in 2018. Parker also spent three years educating and arranging for The Ogden High indoor program. Under his direction they took three first place trophies and took second in the IMPA state championships in 2017. Parker currently works with Ogden High, Gold Spike Indoor Percussion, and American Fork High School
David Strait • Tenor Drums
David Strait is the music instructor at Capstone Classical Academy in Pleasant View, UT and holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a minor in Political Science from Weber State University. Prior to attending Weber State University, he was a member of the New Mexico State University competitive indoor drum line and placed 3rd in the Percussive Arts Society International Convention collegiate tenor drum solo competition. In addition to university ensembles, Mr. Strait has performed with the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra, the Ogden Mustangs Drumline, and the Patriots Drum & Bugle Corps of Rochester, NY. He is also an active percussion clinician in northern Utah. Mr. Strait has studied orchestral, chamber, solo, and marching percussion performance under Professor Sam Bryson, Dr. Fred Bugbee, Jeff Ausdemore, and Chris Romanowski. He proudly served as a member of the United States Army Reserve from 2010 to 2016.
Stephen Tullis • Tenor Drums
Stephen has been passionate about the performing arts ever since he was young and has experience in theater, dance, and music. He is currently studying Music Education at UVU. He performed with various marching ensembles within the state, including South County Percussion, Impact Percussion, and UVU's Green Man Group.
Stephen's has taught at American Fork HS, Westlake HS, and Wasatch HS Indoor Percussion. In 2016 he was hired at Lehi High School as the Percussion Caption Head for their Marching band, which has won multiple percussion awards under his direction. In 2019, he was the snare tech for Impact Percussion, as we as he helped revive the Lehi indoor percussion ensemble after a 4 year hiatus from the activity. Lehi's ensemble took 2nd place in the IMPA Scholastic A Class Finals, and Impact placed 6th at WGI A Class Finals.
Stephen is extremely excited to join the Gold Spike family and can't wait to see what the 2020 season holds for the ensemble!
Caitlin Lipsey • Cymbals
Caitlin Lipsey is 24 years old and has been participating in the marching arts for many years. She currently performs with Weber State University as a student instructor in the cymbal section. She marched for the Battalion Drum and Bugle Corps as a mellophone player and aged-out of Weber State Indoor Percussion (now Gold Spike Percussion) in their cymbal section.
Caitlin is going to school at Weber State University and is studying music and psychology. Her end goal is to be a music therapist and workin mental health. She is currently the Assistant Director for the Roy High Marching Band and loves working with the program.
Caitlin strives to get the students in shape for the season and help them have the best experience possible in the program. She also enjoys drawing, singing, exercise, showing off her service dog, Bella, and being outdoors.
Davey Martinez • Bass Drums
Davey began his marching career in Las Vegas, Nevada, playing alto sax in the Bishop Gorman High School Marching Band. He played the sax for three years, and then became center snare during his senior year. During his sophomore year he joined Vegas Vanguard Percussion Theater, where he would spend 5 seasons playing cymbals, bass drum, and aging-out on snare drum in 2017. During his time with Vegas Vanguard, the ensemble received 2 Bronze Medals in the A Class at WGI World Championships, and competed the following 3 seasons in the Open Class. Davey spent his rook-out season of DCI as a member of the bass line for the Battalion Drum and Bugle Corps’ inaugural season in 2016. For multiple years, he has also been a part of Vegas Vanguard Entertainment, performing on stage at award shows and high-caliber nightclubs with acts such as Taylor Swift, Tiësto, Ca$h Ca$h, Wisin, Lil Jon, Drake, and more.
Davey spent two years in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas “Star of Nevada” Marching Band on bass drum and snare drum. He is currently studying Instrumental Music Education at Utah Valley University, and is a three year member, and second year Drum Captain, of the school’s Green Man Group, where he has played bass drum, snare drum, and tenors.
Davey started teaching percussion at his alma mater, Bishop Gorman, in 2016, and has since taught and multiple high schools in both Las Vegas and in Utah. He has spent his past 2 indoors seasons with Impact Percussion, from Provo, Utah, working with both the cymbal and bass drum sections. Davey has also spent the past 2 summers as the primary bass drum tech at the Battalion Drum and Bugle Corps.
